Soft start vs. surge protection

A soft start cuts the startup (inrush) current of your AC compressor, so your AC starts smoothly on a generator or shore power. Surge protection is a separate feature that guards against sudden voltage spikes. Check the product title and description to see whether a model includes surge protection.
